Can you connect with my client's struggles? My clients want to cherish their spouse and be happy in their marriage, but they found out pretty quickly that marriage is a lot more complicated than they thought it would be.
When they first come in, they feel a little ashamed at how their marriage has gotten to the place where it is now. Their lives have gotten so busy, their hearts drifted away from each other without realizing it.
They might have seen issues when they were dating, but didn't expect them to get worse as their marriage went on. Habits and behaviors that were once a minor inconvenience are now a major problem, and they're looking for help to even enjoy being around each other again.
Sometimes, one spouse is leaning in and making the effort towards rescuing the marriage. The other learned how to “walk on eggshells" along time ago and shut down being known in an effort to not stir the pot and make a hard marriage even worse. The loneliness and fear to engage wittles away at the heart.
Their conflicts, fears, and busy schedules get in the way of the life they want in so many ways. They aren’t the kind of spouse, parent, friend, or Christ follower they want to be. They feel like they’re failing in their life and marriage. And their confidence in prayer is tanking.
Before they came to see me, they feared that an empty marriage or divorce was just inevitable. Personal anxiety, depression, loneliness, and thoughts of suicide were skyrocketing. Ignoring the problem didn't fix it, and you could see the toll it was taking on them from a mile away.
As Proverbs 17:22 says,”A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
